Importing from China: what’s the story?

Between 1978 and 2020, China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) jumped from around US$150 billion to US$14.7 trillion. According to data from the World Bank, the Chinese GDP reached the home of trillions of dollars in 1998 alone. Since then, growth has continued unabated.

Chinese civilization was formed over millennia, and until the mid-twentieth century, before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the country was ruled by dynasties of emperors.

Since more than 2,000 years before Christ, each dynasty has ruled for centuries. The year 2021, for example, corresponds to the year 4719 on the Chinese calendar. “It is a people that, in terms of civilization, has been developing and growing for a long time,” said Vinícius Marques, partner and Information Director at Guelcos International, during the Logcomex Summit.

At the event, which took place in October 2021, Marques addressed how the country’s historical process reflects on imports from China today and what influence the formation of the country’s civilization has on this whole new scenario of global power.

All this evolution in China’s economy started in the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period in which the country underwent major political and economic reforms. Perhaps the main characteristic of these changes was an opening of the market to the outside world.

How did China become a giant in foreign trade?

Since then, the country has started to take new directions. The urban population grew a lot and big cities were formed to turn the new economy, which was previously closed to the outside world.

Thus, China was solving internal problems to rise first in the Asian scene and, consequently, become one of the leading economic powers on the world stage. And export and import from China mark this stage, which has already had different phases.
